Newsletter No. 1 : Going Beyond the Edge
The poem on the Home page is a slightly modified version of a poem by Christopher Logue in honour of Appollinaire. This is the original :
Come to the edge.
We might fall.
Come to the edge.
It's too high!
Come to the edge.
And they came, and we pushed,
And they flew.
I called my business Coaching on the Edge because edges are the place where things change, areas of transition, places where you cross the line. Coaching is all about change, transition, even transformation.
Often, when we are thinking of changing something, we try to work it all out in our head in advance. But there is wisdom in the body too.
Try this :
- Think of where you are in some area of your life and then, for that same area, somewhere different that you think you might like to be instead.
- Create a ‘line’ on the floor, with string or a ruler or a ribbon – whatever is at hand.
- Place something (small and portable) on the far side of the line that represents the new territory.
- Stand facing the line with the new territory on the other side. Really believe that if you cross the line you will be in this new territory. Take a deep breath.
- Cross it – walk, crawl, run, jump, dance, cartwheel. Be silent, shout, sing. Whatever feels right for you. But GO!
- You’ve crossed. Well done! Experience what it is like being in that new territory. Savour it. Explore it.
- Look back at where you came from. Which side of the line do you want to be. Which feels right?
- If you choose the new territory, plan the next step for moving into it for real.
- If you choose to stay where you are for the time being, that’s fine too. What’s important is that you’re choosing it.
- Pick up the ‘something’ you placed in the new territory. Keep it with you to remind you of the new territory.
If you do this exercise and would like to feed back to me what came out of it for you, I’d love to hear from you.
